Ozark County & Captain Stone's Mounted Company

Captain Stone's Mounted Company
Ozark County Home Guard Regiment Mounted
United States Reserve Corps Cavalry
Also known as the United States Reserve Corps, Company A, Ozark County.

Captain Thomas B. S. Stone’s Company was comprised of 132 mounted men. This cavalry was organized by the authority of General Thomas William Sweeney, on July 16th, 1861, in Springfield, Missouri.  This unit acted as scouts on the State Road from Springfield, Mo., to Jacksonport, Ark., until October 18th, 1861, when it was mustered out at Rolla, Missouri.  Captain Stone's picture & grave-site can be seen here at Find A Grave. It is a classic picture with a cigar in the corner of his mouth.  Again, below is the list of his regiment compiled from the Missouri Secretary of State’s Missouri's Union Provost Marshal Papers: 1861 – 1866  & National Park Service’s Soldiers and Sailors Database. As a side note, notice this company has its own musician listed.

Captain Thomas B. S. Stone and his wife Nancy Ann Murphree Stone were married Dec. 23, 1841, at Greene County, Arkansas.  They are found in Ozark County, Missouri, during the 1860 Census with four children.  I have no idea what the B. S. stands for in his name.

Ozark County & Captain Martindale's Company

Captain Martindale's Infantry Company
While walking though local cemeteries in the Ozarks, I have begun to note some of the fading stones of our Civil War Soldiers. I have compiled a list of soldiers for my personal study  from which I have gathered from the Missouri Secretary of State’s Missouri's Union Provost Marshal Papers: 1861 – 1866  & National Park Service’s Soldiers and Sailors Database.  At the request of other researchers, I am posting my two lists of Ozark County Regiments, also called the Home Guard Infantry.  Feel free to copy & paste these for your own study.  These include Captain William. F. Martindale's Infantry Company and Captain Thomas B. S. Stone’s Mounted Company.  This first list is Captain Martindale's Company which was comprised of 79 men.

General Nathaniel Lyon
This company was organized in Ozark County, Missouri, on the 28th of June, 1861, by authority of General Nathaniel Lyon. The duty of this regiment was to patrol Ozark and adjacent counties for Confederate Gorilla Soldiers or Bushwhackers. This regiment continued in service until October 13, 1861.  During this time, two men were killed in action, and three men died of their wounds.
